What does a metalworker do?

Metalworkers (Metallbauer/in) fabricate metal parts, steel components, metal windows and metal façades. The differences between locksmiths (Schlosser) and metalworkers are now negligible. In the workshop, metalworkers operate drilling machines and lathes. There’s a lot of welding, sometimes just filing or hammering. Grinders and cut-off discs are everyday tools. Fundamentally, the process involves shaping constructions in metal and glass — sometimes incorporating wooden or natural-stone treads for stairs.

Installers fit the metal constructions on site, either alone or as part of a team. Metalworkers are usually specialists in metal construction and forging. They primarily work with steel and aluminium, but also with chrome-nickel steel, brass, gunmetal, copper and glass.
